Opening with a thesis on low-carbon building by Tokyo University Professor emeritus Shuzo Murakami, the book then features Botond Bognar’s essay on Nikken Sekkei’s longstanding commitment to ecological design, highly illustrated profiles of 16 famous projects, and a comprehensive investigation of sustainable technology and materials by some of the firm’s leading designers and thinkers. Contrasting the serious intent is some luminous colour photography; the profile of the Kyoto State Guest House, with its autumnal leaves, animals, water and wind, demonstrates Nikken Sekkei’s mobilisation of nature and technology in the service of sustainable beauty.
